Newton's 3rd law - it is all about reactions !

August 12th 2016 - We had our first OB visit and our very first ultrasound..

Until then it really hadn't sunk in

 We never really fathomed the intensity and profundity of what was happening  - until - the very first time we saw the little pulsating bean.The room was quiet except for the gentle rhythmic thumping and before I knew it, a small tear drop formed at the corner of my eye.

I don't think either of us remember what the doctor told us after that .

The next few hours were a daze , we went to work , got home,  roamed around downtown, had dinner trying to grasp the reality of what we had experienced and  letting the whole idea wash over us.

Aug 13th 2016 - it was time for the big reveal to the family - now we flipped a coin and picked my parents as the first call to make .

Small talk small talk - -How was the move ?  - curse the movers - capitalists - yada- yada -
 Kaushik goes - check out the view from our place --- and he flashes the ultrasound -

There is silence and then a noise, not unlike a tap bursting -
My Mom :  Bursts out crying and screaming "is it what I think it is ?? - Anu - Is it? "
My Dad : Confused - looks at us, looks at mom- trying to figure out what's going on
My Mom - Still crying has moved on to thanking all the gods she believes in -(probably also threw in a few new ones that she didn't quite believe in before)

We fill dad in and  there are smiles galore

Skype call - Kumar Prerna , Pune

Hi ... How was the move? - small talk - Ultrasound flashed

K's Dad : "Yenna puthu carpet aa? "  (What is that ? A new carpet? )
K's Mom : " Curtain vangirkela"  ( Did you buy new curtains )

To be fair,  we have shown them a whole bunch of furniture, home accessories mostly, black, white or grey ...over the years

Me : Actually that is a photo of your future grandchild

K's Mom : Squeals with joy and starts clapping

K's Dad : "You have taken the best decision!!! " Burst into tears and it almost felt like he wanted to get transported through Skype to come give K a huge hug!


Skype call - New Delhi 

Anand (My bro, a legal associate) : Hey Di , what's up ?
small talk - mostly about legal stuff that usually goes over my head.
There is a half a second pause for breath and we swoop in with the ultrasound

Anand : Eyes super wide - What ?  OMG ! What ?? Sh**
              Wait - I am not ready for this - I mean - I'm only 25 - it's too early
               My ducks are not in a row yet!
               No one asked me -  Noways!
              I have to leave my job !

This was probably our favorite reaction of the lot - still can't stop laughing .

Skype call - New Jersey

Pooja (K's sis) : Hey - what's going on?
small talk
Ultrasound flashed

Pooj : hey - what is that? Is that a ultrasound?  That's awesome!!!
K : You are going to be an athai :)
Pooj : That's really awesome!  I hope it;s a girl
Me: You have to teach the kid to dance - coz you know he ain't gettin that from us  :) :)

F.R.I.E.N.D.S - episode 1

Rakesh, Karishma (+ Kabir :) ) and Riyu visited us first after we moved to San Diego. K and I were looking for a good segway to break the news. Sometimes, the best moments are more ironic than anything else :) We were hanging out , Rakesh was taken in by the idyllic view from the house, said something to the effect of - "you know you guys have the right idea - don't invest in kids , buy a nice sail boat and sail into the open ocean" K and I burst out laughing and brought out the ultrasound  ! Long story short, we had a fantastic weekend exploring the new hood and lazing around on Coronado beach. I specifically wanted to add the photo with the 4 of us - because believe it or not, it was clicked by Riyu - a 3.5 year old !!! Later that night, we broke the news to Sid, Tamanna , Adi and Armaan ..and the pic says it all ! :) P.S. I have to mention all the names because as you can very well see from the pic below, Sid is a limelight hog :P

T minus 5 ... My first pregnancy post

5 days to go for the due date and here I am sitting down to pen my first post. In a way, this is great since it helps me recap and relive this blur - that has been my pregnancy.   Most people who have asked me; how it has been, have probably heard me say this - and I still say it with gratitude - it has truly been a great pregnancy. I was fortunate to  not suffer from morning sickness or any other symptoms and t his helped me keep up with a full energetic work & social life, exercise, travel and most importantly - great food :) All of that combined with great friends & family , really good work environment , lots of advice (;)), superb childbirth instructors and a chilled out OB-GYN helped both K and me really take it easy and enjoy every stage of this journey.  As we hang out waiting for the D-Day - we hope to share some stories from the past 9 months, random texts that I cannot let K live down,  "aha" moments & the evolution of our perspective a...

Body positive

"Body Positive. To me this means being grateful for my body when it works really well, surprises me in its ability to heal & provide & give me physical stamina so I can be emotionally available for what is most meaningful in life. "  This was truly a powerful message from Tara stiles that pretty much embodied my approach to staying fit and active during this pregnancy.  According to Ina May Gaskin , the  "average" length of labor for a woman having her first child is 12 to 18 hours.  While K and I hope that our lil one slides out as comfortably and swiftly as possible, we knew we had to prepare  like training for a marathon, which meant building both physical and mental endurance.   Luckily for me, Tara stiles was on her way to motherhood just a few weeks ahead of me , which meant - Prenatal Yoga videos !!! :)  Yoga in the first half of my first trimester was a bit tentative and more constrained.
